Most churches have a website, but very few show up when someone searches "churches near me" on Google. The good news is that basic SEO for churches is not complicated. For a deeper dive, read our full guide on how to improve your church's Google ranking. Here are ten things you can fix today that will make a real difference.
1. Claim your Google Business Profile
This is the single most important thing you can do. Go to business.google.com and claim or create your church's listing. Add your address, phone number, service times, photos, and a description. This is what shows up in Google Maps and local search results. If you do nothing else on this list, do this.
2. Put your address and service times on every page
Google uses this information to understand what you are and where you are. Your address, city, state, and service times should appear in the footer of every page on your website, not just the contact page.
3. Write a proper page title and description for every page
Your page title (the text that appears in browser tabs and search results) should be descriptive and include your church name and location. For example: "Grace Community Church | Sunday Services in Springfield, IL" is much better than just "Home".
Your meta description should be a one to two sentence summary of the page. This is what appears below the title in Google search results.
4. Make your site mobile-friendly
More than 65 percent of people searching for churches do so from a phone. If your website is not responsive (meaning it adjusts to fit any screen size), Google will rank it lower. Test your site on your own phone. Can you read everything without pinching and zooming? Can you tap buttons easily?
5. Add alt text to every image
Alt text is a text description of an image that screen readers use and search engines read. Instead of "IMG_4532.jpg", write "Sunday worship service at Grace Community Church". This helps Google understand your content and improves accessibility.
6. Fix broken links
Broken links (pages that return a 404 error) hurt your search ranking and frustrate visitors. Click through your navigation and check that every link works. Free tools like Google Search Console can identify broken links automatically.
7. Speed up your site
Slow websites rank lower. The most common culprits at church websites are oversized images. Resize photos to a maximum of 1200 pixels wide and compress them before uploading. Remove any auto-playing videos on your homepage.
8. Get listed in church directories
Submit your church to online directories: Google, Bing Places, Apple Maps, Church Finder, Find a Church, and any denominational directories. Each listing creates a "citation" that tells search engines your church is a real, established entity.
9. Ask members to leave Google reviews
Google reviews directly influence your local search ranking. Ask five to ten engaged members to write an honest review of their experience at your church. Reviews that mention specific things like "welcoming to visitors" or "great children's program" are especially helpful.
10. Add structured data to your website
Structured data (also called schema or JSON-LD) is code that helps Google understand your content. The most important types for churches are:
- •Organization: Your church name, address, logo, and contact info
- •Event: Your weekly service times and special events
- •FAQPage: Common questions visitors might ask
If editing code is not your strength, many church website platforms handle this automatically. ChurchRaise's website builder, for example, adds structured data without requiring any technical knowledge.
Start small, be consistent
You do not need to do all ten of these today. Start with the top three: Google Business Profile, address on every page, and proper page titles. Then work through the rest over the next few weeks.
SEO is not a one-time project. It is a set of ongoing habits. But even small improvements can make a meaningful difference in how many new families find your church online. If your website itself needs an upgrade, see our guide to the best church website builders.
