What is a benediction?
A benediction is a short blessing spoken at the end of a Christian worship service.
The word comes from Latin words meaning "to speak well" or "to bless."
A benediction is different from simply saying goodbye. It usually reminds the congregation that worship continues beyond the church building and sends people out with God's blessing.
A pastor or worship leader might introduce it by saying:
"Receive this benediction."
or:
"As we go, receive this blessing."

What Should You Say Before a Benediction?
If your church does not regularly use the word "benediction," you do not need to make the moment overly formal.
You can simply say:
""Before we leave, receive this blessing.""
Other options include:

- •"Would you stand as we close with a benediction?"
- •"Go from this place with these words of blessing."

A brief introduction helps the congregation understand that the final words are more than an announcement that the service has finished.
What Is the Difference Between a Benediction and a Closing Prayer?
A closing prayer is addressed to God, while a benediction is generally spoken as a blessing over the congregation.
For example, a closing prayer might begin:
"Father, thank you for bringing us together today."
A benediction might begin:
"May the Lord strengthen you and guide you throughout the week ahead."
Churches often use both. The pastor may offer a closing prayer and then finish the service with a short benediction.
How Long Should a Benediction Be?
Most benedictions only need to be 15 to 60 seconds long.
A benediction is not normally another sermon. Its purpose is to leave the congregation with a clear blessing or charge as they return to their daily lives.

How to Choose the Right Benediction
The benediction should feel connected to the service that came before it.
If the sermon was about hope, consider sending people out with Romans 15:13.
If the sermon focused on mission, use a benediction that encourages the congregation to go and serve.
If the church has experienced loss or difficulty, choose words emphasizing God's presence, comfort and faithfulness.
If the service focused on community, end with a blessing about unity, hospitality or loving one another.
